About Vicky Frederiksen

Vicky Frederiken Painter artist Bowen Island

"I was born and raised in North Vancouver and both my parents were architects and amazingly creative in the arts. Art and creativity were always in my life. Drawing and painting was a passion when I was very young.

In 1978, at 23, I moved to California and got a job as a draftsman making structural steel drawings. I never thought of myself as creative, since the drawings were very strict and exact.

In September 2007 I needed a drastic lifestyle change and moved to Bowen Island. I decided that if I wanted to live differently, I would have to think differently.

I discovered through painting in oils in the style of the old Masters, in a workshop with Stuart Slind, that I could be creative and imperfect as well. In fact, sometimes the imperfections turned out to be “perfect”. I loved the idea that I could flow with my inspiration when I let go of the outcome.

Through doing personal work that went hand in hand with my painting, I now live with integrity, inspiration, full of enthusiasm for life and my love of the arts."

About Carol McNaughton

"Upon retirement from the Graphic Arts industry where I supervised graphic artists, I  had time and space to explore my own creativity.  Soon after moving to Bowen island I started to paint, first in watercolours and then in oil.

Drawing and painting were  pass times I enjoyed as a child, and  I was encouraged by parents and teachers to develop my talent.  Upon graduating from high school I enrolled in the art college in Calgary.

My favourite subjects are portraiture and animal painting.  Living on Bowen has given me a lot of inspiration.  I love and draw from its scenic beauty."
